The winner was announced today for author Joe Perez’s “Illustrate a Fantasy Hero” contest, which determined the artwork for his upcoming literary series and sci-fi fantasy book starring the character Kalen O’Tolan. The winner was Gavin Baldwin of Kearns, Utah.

Baldwin’s design triumphed over 130 competing illustrations submitted by over 40 different artists through Freelancer.com. He was awarded the contest price of $667 and he will receive a signed copy of the first installment of the sci-fi/fantasy book, “The Black Stone (The Kalendar, Book 1)”.

The contest required participants to submit drawings for the character of Kalen at three different ages: age 9, age 18, and age 27. The challenge was not only show age progression, but also reveal the soul of an immortal man who is the leader in three Kosmic Wars: The War of the Zodiac, The War of the Archetypes, and The War of the Deities.

Joe Perez, author of The Kalendar Series, said, “The response to the contest was overwhelming, including talented designers competing from all across the globe. Many people were attracted to drawing a Kosmic Hero, a rare opportunity to imagine the world a little differently, alive with ideas and spirit and drama on a grand scale.”

“I was immediately drawn to Kalen,” said Baldwin, “because he had many of the familiar characteristics of the mighty heroes I enjoy reading about in fantasy tales.” Baldwin’s portraits of Kalen show a man possessing sublime strength and determination as well as sensitivity.

Winners were selected in part through voting on Joe Perez’s Facebook pages, especially the Official Joe Perez Author Page. In addition to polls of his fans, Perez also received feedback from friends, family, and the book’s publisher, Tangent Publishers, an imprint of Integral Publishers.

Among the voting participants was Peter Voeller, author of the science-fiction novel Vantanahon. He said, “Though I haven’t read the story, I liked the dark troubled angst that came through all three ages in which the hero was portrayed … real and a little intimidating.”

The first book in The Kalendar Series will be released in the fall of 2015. For the latest information, visit the website for publisher Tangent Publishers.
