Falling for Johnny, Alison McLennan’s debut novel, was recently awarded an Honorable Mention Prize in Inkubate’s first Literary Blockbuster Challenge. Inkubate’s founder, Stacy Clark, developed the challenge with a team of industry professionals to identify novels that are literary page-turners. The contest received hundreds of entries. The lead judge, James W. Hall, a retired professor of Creative Writing at Florida International University, has written many books including a guide for aspiring writers entitled, Hit Lit: Cracking the Code of the Twentieth Century’s Biggest Bestsellers.
Falling for Johnny tells the story of a teenage girl in South Boston during the 1980’s. Her family becomes embroiled in the underworld and is torn apart by a Bulger-like character. The novel also won an award in the Utah Arts Council 2012 Original Writing Competition. McLennan received the first Dennis Lehane fellowship for Fiction to the Solstice Program of Pine Manor College where she completed her MFA in 2013. Kirkus Reviews calls Falling for Johnny “A dark violent novel with a heart.”
The real James Whitey Bulger, however, may not have much of a heart. His trial spanned three months and exposed not only his blood thirsty quest for power, but also the federal corruption that enabled him. Convicted of racketeering, conspiracy, and involvement in eleven murders, Bulger faces sentencing on November thirteenth.
