Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), will be addressing college-bound Opportunities For Learning (OFL) Public Charter School students at their Senior Signing Day event on Thursday, May 5th at 6:00pm at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills, CA.
Spencer will be speaking to OFL students as part of Michelle Obama’s Reach Higher initiative, the First Lady’s effort to inspire every student in American to take charge of their future by pursuing educational opportunities beyond high school. More information on the initiative can be found at www.whitehouse.gov/reach-higher.
Wendy Spencer began serving as CEO of the CNCS on April 9, 2012, shortly after being nominated by President Obama and unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Spencer’s management career spans 32 years and includes leadership roles in the government, non-profit, and private sectors.
Opportunities For Learning serves students in grades 7-12 that have fallen behind, are looking to get ahead, or are seeking an alternative to the traditional school environment. More about OFL can be found at www.emsofl.com.
This year marks OFL’s fourth annual Senior Signing Day, a banquet event for college bound students and their families where students announce the college or university they will be attending and ceremoniously sign letters of intent to enroll. Students are given t-shirts and pennants from their upcoming alma mater.
“Signing Day is a highlight of our year, a celebration that continues to build momentum as more and more students realize that a 4-year college or university is within reach. We’re honored to have a representative of the White House address our students and are thrilled to have Wendy Spencer, who is such a champion for service,” says Carla Mueller, OFL-San Fernando Valley Principal.
