Western Berks Ambulance Association has become the first emergency services team in Reading, Pennsylvania, to receive the Certified Autism Center
This designation is granted by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and requires that 80% or more of the EMTs, paramedics, and other Western Berks Ambulance Association public-facing workers complete training through IBCCES. The training and certification program helps first responders to better understand, approach, and provide support to autistic individuals or those with other sensory sensitivities.
“The population of autistic individuals is growing at a rapid rate in our country and also our community. Our trained medical professionals need to be mindful and knowledgeable on how to treat these patients and be able to offer them the care and compassion needed during an emergency situation,” said Deputy Chief, Carrie Frey. “We want to be able to provide them a safe and secure feeling as well as the family when our help is called upon.”
IBCCES has been the industry leader in cognitive disorder training and certification for education, healthcare, first responders, law enforcement, hospitality and corporate professionals for more than 20 years. IBCCES offers evidence-based training and certification programs developed in collaboration with clinical experts and autistic self-advocates to help professionals working with people who have cognitive disorders gain a better understanding of these disorders, industry best practices, and relevant standards.
“IBCCES is truly excited to partner with the Western Berks Ambulance Association to build upon and enhance the team’s skills and understanding,” said Myron Pincomb, IBCCES Board Chairman. “This designation shows their commitment to providing the best care for members of the community and ensuring they can respond appropriately in critical situations.”
IBCCES also created CertifiedAutismCenter.com, as a free online resource for parents that lists certified locations and professionals. Each organization listed on the site has met the Certified Autism Center
