With May marking National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, Las Vegas-based Tingey Injury Law Firm is encouraging Nevadans to view the observance as a wake-up call in light of recent trends toward more fatalities from motorcycle accidents in the state.
Tingey Injury Law Firm helps residents of the greater-Las Vegas area who have been hurt due to slips and falls; car, motorcycle, and pedestrian accidents; workplace accidents; dog bites and other injuries. With over 50 years of experience, they know how to stand up to Big Insurance and help clients get full compensation for property damages, lost wages, and medical bills.
In 2019, the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety released statistics showing that motorcycle deaths had increased in the state by 8% over the previous year, a trend that Tingey is joining with other organizations to reverse.
Attorney Dean Tingey said that his firm has seen countless devastating cases that have resulted from a lack of caution—either on the part of motorcyclists or drivers who share the road with them. “Our traumatic brain injury attorneys have seen lives forever altered by these accidents, and the sad thing is that many of them were preventable.”
Tingey cautioned that with warmer weather and phased reopening following COVID-19 stay-at-home orders, conditions are ripe for motorcycle accidents to increase in the next few months.
“Summer tends to bring more accidents with people traveling, teens out of school, and an increase in drunk driving around Memorial Day and the Fourth of July,” said Tingey. “It’s always a more dangerous time to be on the road.”
The most recent statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) show that nearly 5,000 motorcyclists are killed per year and that motorcyclists are about 28 times as likely to die in crashes than car occupants.
Tingey said that as his firm’s traffic accident lawyers can attest to, the most important thing for motorcyclists is to wear a helmet that meets Department of Transportation standards. The NHTSA’s latest statistics show that helmets saved 1,872 lives in 2017 and could have prevented nearly 800 more deaths if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.
Tingey also urged motorcyclists to drive sober, citing the National Safety Council’s finding that nearly 30 percent of motorcyclists who died in crashes were alcohol-impaired.
Tingey attorneys urged motorcyclists to take a safety course (and periodic refresher), observe all rules (especially speed limits), and assume they are invisible to other cars.
They also encouraged car and truck drivers to share the road courteously with motorcyclists, allowing a four-second cushion when driving behind them, looking before turning at an intersection, and checking blind spots often.
