In its 37 years of watch repair service, Times Ticking has seen major changes in the retail watch industry, many ushered in by online shopping. While ecommerce has increased convenience and selection for shoppers, it has also opened up a greater possibility for fraud, which is why the Times Ticking team is applauding eBay’s new Authenticity Guarantee
Times Ticking specializes in clock and watch repair and sales at their retail stores in Layton and Ogden, Utah. A third center, located in Kaysville, is dedicated to mail-in repairs, with complicated repair jobs coming to them from around the globe. The company has built a reputation for accepting repair requests that other shops turn down and being willing to hunt for hard-to-find parts.
Seth Thompson at Times Ticking said that he has seen many “lemons” purchased online come into his shop, underscoring the need for guarantees such as eBay’s.
“This is a much-needed service that eBay is rolling out and will help end significant heartburn for eBay customers who are in the market for a watch,” said Thompson. “It ensures that a third-party authenticator will get eyes on every wristwatch sold for over $2,000 on eBay and close up loopholes for fraud.”
After purchase, qualifying high-end watches (excluding smart watches) will be sent to a certified third-party inspector to ensure that the watch is consistent with the eBay listing title, images and description. They will then perform a multi-point authentication inspection. If the watch passes, the authenticator will attach a security tag to the watch and send it to the purchaser via two-day shipping, signature required upon receipt. There will be no extra cost to the recipient for this service.
“When it comes to watches, eBay can go one of two ways — it can be a great way to find a beautiful, high-end watch for a great price, or it can burn you if you end up with a cheap knock-off with poorly made parts. This allows people to buy with much greater confidence on the platform,” said Thompson.
Thompson is particularly excited that the guarantee applies to vintage watches, which is a specialty area of Times Ticking. The company has extensive expertise in vintage clocks and watches and has deep networks for finding the parts and pieces needed to keep aging timepieces in top condition.
Times Ticking can perform everything from simple battery replacements on Citizen, Breitling, Fossil, Seiko, Timex, Tag Heuer, Bulova, Rolex and other top brands up to the complete restoration of antique clocks and watches.
