The D’Andre D. Lampkin Foundation is announcing the opening of its national Social Good Scholarship application period, to be conducted digitally for the first time due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The application period is open through the end of March 2021. Applicants can visit lampkinfoundation.org/social-good-scholarship-fund.
Founder and CEO D’Andre Lampkin says the different approach this year will involve applicants filming a thirty-second to three-minute video on how they can impact their community. Since the scholarship’s inception four years ago, applicants have submitted essays about their community service.
Lampkin adds that amidst COVID-19, as well as political and social unrest nationwide, it’s important to continue to shine the light on how ordinary people can effect positive change. “There are people who, instead of looking inward at themselves right now, are looking for ways they can be part of the solution,” he says, ”Those are the next generation of leaders we aim to support.”
The 501(c)(3) charitable organization’s mission is to create positive opportunities and change for individuals, communities, and environments. Their vision is for communities that are fully-engaged, where all stakeholders are self-reliant and fully-supported by sustainable ingenuity and grassroots efforts.
Past Social Good Scholarship winners include Elaine Kan of Glendale, CA, who uses her social media platforms to teach her younger followers how to love themselves and increase their confidence. Kan wishes to expand on her mission – to transcend her capacity as a role model by designing what she calls “social armor” for others.
Another past winner is Sarina McCabe of South Bend, IN, the author of The Devil in Amen’s Corner, a novel addressing race, disparities in education, and sexual assault. McCabe uses the book as a tool for discussion about social stigmas, and is determined to empower others to become more active in their community.
