“If you requested a six-month extension to your 2018 federal tax return, the deadline will be here before you know it. October 15th is right around the corner,” said Dave Du Val, Chief Customer Advocacy Officer at TaxAudit. “The tax moves you make this year may be different than those you’ve made in the past. Spend time doing your homework.”

Some of the important reminders for October filers include:

  1. 2018 tax laws are very different from prior years, so make sure you are aware of what’s changed with respect to your situation.
  2. Review the spelling of names and all social security numbers for accuracy.
  1. Choose the correct filing status for your specific situation. The IRS has in interactive tool that can help you select the correct filing status if you are unsure.
  1. Any calculations you have done outside the tax program should be double-checked for accuracy.
  1. If you have more than one option for claiming a credit or deduction, be sure to choose the one that is most advantageous for your specific situation.
  1. If you are using the direct deposit or direct debit options, double check your bank information entries for accuracy.
  1. Sign and date your tax return and any checks you are including if you are mailing in your tax return with a payment as well as writing the correct tax year in the memo section of the check.
  1. Make sure you mail your federal and state tax returns to the correct IRS and state tax offices.
  1. Have last year’s tax return information available when you e-file to avoid electronic filing errors.

“In addition to the above tips, if you receive any letter or notice from the IRS or your state taxing agency – open it immediately,” said Du Val. “Due to the prevalence of tax identity theft, many taxpayers have received letters from the IRS’s Identity Verification Service. Taxpayers who receive IRS Letter Number LTR5071C must verify their identity before their return will be processed.”

Please note: This is a short list of some of the important reminders about filing taxes ahead of the October 15th deadline. Please spend time learning about tax rules at IRS.gov so you are knowledgeable about qualifying deductions, exemptions, and more that may help to reduce your tax burden.
