Drowning is among the top ten causes of child deaths worldwide, according to a report from the World Health Organization (WHO). The survey shows that 372,000 people die annually from drowning worldwide. In the United States, Florida is the region that leads the drowning infant death rate, a figure that has been growing every year. From 2016 to 2018, the number of boys and girls up to 5 years old by drowning ports increased by 38%, reaching 78 last year, according to the State Department of Health.
To try to change this sad statistic, Brazilian couple Alex and Ester Delgado, who lost their two-year-old daughter Susan, in 2017 at their home pool, decided to return to the U.S with a social project to support and offer information to other families who experience the same drama. The project, named after the couple’s daughter, is non-profit and will unite the family’s passion for music – Alex, Ester and their son Nick are professional musicians – as a way to fight for drowning prevention.
‘Susan Forever Project’
Forming a musical ensemble, the couple will perform at hospitals, churches, schools, and other public places in Florida and plan to move to other states. The purpose is to bring comfort songs, but also words of guidance and honors to the lives lost in the water. The idea is to use the sounds to comfort the heart and present all the statistics and testimonials they have collected to catch attention to the subject.
“Our Susan will never come back, but we want to keep alive everything she taught us in the two years she was with us. Sweetness, joy, disposition, hugs, cuddles and family unity are the essence of this project, but above all we want to spread knowledge and with our experience allow other children to be saved in time and live intensely, just as our daughter lived in her life,” explains Alex Delgado.
Alex explains that in Florida, to get an understanding of the problem, the annual death toll for children under five in the area would be enough to fill four classrooms. “The Susan Forever project will be a guiding organization, focusing on prevention and recovery of family members who have lost their loved ones,” explains Alex.
The authors of Susan Forever also invite society to participate in preventing this type of accident. Information and tips on first aid and other safety measures are available on the project’s official website (www.susanforever.org). Alex and Ester Delgado also release statistics on the topic and opinions of relatives of victims through their social media.
The couple, author of the project, intends to create a wide support network and debate on the subject with the American, Brazilian and Hispanic communities residing abroad. “Ideally, we should all be together to be able to exchange experiences and seek relief from this pain collectively. Connecting with a support network will make all the difference,” explains Alex Delgado.
