In just 10 years, Stefan Georgi has grossed more than $1 billion through direct-response copywriting. Fellow copywriter and host of the popular “High-income Business Writing” podcast, Ed Gandia, recently interviewed Stefan about the best strategies for growing a freelance copywriting business.

In addition to scaling his own business to become one of the most profitable copywriters in the world, Georgi has also mentored and coached thousands of others. In the interview with Ed Gandia, Stefan shared his journey from a burnt-out corporate salesman to world-renowned copywriting freelancer. He discussed how to break into the industry, then move toward more profitable clients and raise fees.

“Take everything you can early on,” said Stefan. “I did whatever I could because it exposed me to different kinds of businesses and styles of writing. Worry less about the money and more about the experience and exposure.”

Once writers have a better idea of what interests them and what they’re good at, Stefan recommended that they begin to specialize in order to command higher fees.

“It comes down to positioning and marketing yourself,” said Stefan. “Look for a unique mechanism where you can say, ‘This is my specialty, I’m the best at it, people always come to me for it.’ Explain why you are better connected with the industry and why you have better copywriting mastery than other writers out there.”

Stefan also told writers to amass tangible feedback and leverage it for higher pay. “Get whatever data you can from the clients, whether it be for engagement or impressions or sales. Gather testimonials so you can go to higher paying clients and let them know what you have to offer. Go to their website, give them tips. Be consultative.”
