Ron Holt sat alone on April Fools’ Day in his new office in Pensacola. Holt had just turned his career upside down by relocating from Atlanta to purchase a small, mom & pop cleaning service. By itself, the day was memorable enough but the day proved to be even more memorable as the day progressed forward.
“I was so excited because my dream had finally been realized. After graduating from college, my main goal was to save a ton of money so that I could purchase a business,” said Ron Holt, CEO & Founder of Two Maids & A Mop. “I still remember signing the check because every dollar used for the purchase was generated from years and years of real sacrifice.”
Unfortunately, Holt’s dream turned out to be a short term nightmare. A mountain of problems occurred within a few hours of the purchase agreement. After opening for business, Holt decided to dig a little deeper into the business and discovered that the financial representations were not quite as rosy as he was led to believe. The business was losing money and overhead was way too high based on the current sales volume. Worse, one of the business’ largest customers had heard of the purchase and decided to use the purchase agreement as a way out of the cleaning contract. Worst of all, nearly half of his employees decided to use the purchase as a reason for resignation from the business. Holt acknowledges that he seriously thought his new business venture might be a part of grand April Fools’ Day joke.
“I was 28 years old and ready to take on the world. But I had no idea that so many things would go wrong so soon. It was shocking and I’ll be the first to admit that my nerves were rattled in a big way,” said Holt.
Fortunately, Holt’s first day as a business owner didn’t crush his desire or vision for the future. In fact, the business has flourished since that fateful April Fools’ Day with exponential growth occurring over the last four years. The company has garnered several industry awards; including being selected as the 2012 National Maid Service of the Year and being recognized as Inc. Magazine’s Fastest Growing Cleaning Company in America in 2013. The company currently operates twelve company owned locations across five states and recently signed its first franchise agreement in Tampa, FL.
“It was a difficult start but I wouldn’t change a thing because I’ve learned so much over the last ten years. We now know exactly what type of person to recruit for employment. We also know what our ideal customer looks like and we know how to make sure that our business is attractive to them when they are searching for a maid service,” said Holt.
Two Maids & A Mop has a unique approach to the cleaning industry which allows its customers to run the show from start to finish. After each cleaning, customers are asked to provide feedback on a scale from 1-10. The number rating is then used to directly determine an employee’s total compensation level.
“Our innovative Pay For Performance Plan turned our struggling business around during the early days. Today, it still serves as our business’ biggest competitive advantage and works because our employees sincerely value their customer’s opinions. Every single employee understands that their entire compensation level is directly tied to customer feedback. There’s absolutely no greater incentive to perform at a high level than tying compensation to customer feedback,” said Holt.
Ron took his lumps early on but those growing pains have proven to be blessings in disguise. The company has used the past ten years to build the perfect maid service concept and is ready to begin franchising its brand across all 48 states.
It’s rare for a company to use such a long period of time to properly build the best systems and practices in order to franchise its brand. “Originally, our plan was to grow internally by building company-owned stores. But the model proved so successful that we decided to learn more about the idea of franchising. We believe that we have the best systems that can be found within the residential cleaning industry and we’re excited about this next chapter of growth,” said Holt.
