Sports KingDome Grand Opening Pushed to Spring

Construction is underway in the Town of East Fishkill, for the world’s largest multi-sport dome but unexpected delays have now pushed the Grand Opening date of the Sports KingDome to next spring. The new target date for opening is Memorial Day weekend 2018.

Navigating the winter months in New York is always a challenge but accounting for just how early the winter will arrive was one of the factors in the decision to push the timeline. Unanticipated delays in the spring and summer months nudged the project ever closer to the “grey” area of taking a chance with the inflation of the $28 million-dollar dome during the bad weather months.

“Recently we have seen an acceleration of the project and will see no pause in construction this fall. Both the build out of concrete walls and concrete slab for the Clubhouse will continue into November, said General Manager, Michael Van Riper. “While we are disappointed with the delay, it does give us time to continue to build key partnerships and relationships and prep for the opening. There are a lot of moving parts to opening a facility of this size and scale both on the construction-side as well as the operational-side.” Over the course of the next few months the Sports KingDome team will continue to host/sponsor events and programs at outside facilities, until open.

Dan Fraioli, CEO of Air Structures American Technologies, Inc., which has built domes for several professional sports teams and other users, said “The dome and air handlers are on site and ready to go and we are all looking forward to inflation and grand opening in the coming months.”

The Sports KingDome’s engineering and design took more than two years to complete. Measuring 740 ft. in length X 460 ft. in width, with a stunning ceiling height of 160 feet, the Sports KingDome has an 8-ft. wide track inside, which runs 1/2 mile and features more than 350,000 square feet of indoor space.
