Andre Chapman, founder of Unity Care, is the recipient of the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits’ Patricia A. Gardner Changemaker Award. This special award is given annually to someone who is active in helping the community move towards racial justice.

Chapman launched his non-profit organization, Unity Care, in 1993. Since then, the agency has grown to be nationally accredited for its array of services that help families, especially youth and young adults who are transitioning out of the foster system, secure safe housing, make caring connections, and learn life skills. The organization proudly serves transitional age foster youth and families ages 16-26 in Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco, Placer, and El Dorado counties.

Upwards of 4,000 California youth are set to age out of the foster care system this year, underscoring a need for ongoing support. Many of these children and young adults are unprepared for the road ahead, whether that’s going to school or getting a job, but Unity Care aims to help them get on track.

Additionally, Unity Care places an emphasis on racial justice. Statistics show that Black youth are disproportionately represented in California’s foster care system, and Chapman has been a driving force in changing this trend.

The Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) is a network of non-profits in the Silicon Valley region working towards racial justice. Together, they work to advocate for policies locally on up to the state level.

“I’m extremely honored and grateful to have received the Patricia A. Gardner Changemaker Award from the Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits,” said Chapman. “This is an extraordinary cause to be aligned with, and I, along with all the other leaders who are part of SVCN, are working to make major impacts in areas where we see racial injustice.”
