Mood swings are pretty normal. That is what most of today’s generation thinks. However, what we are failing to acknowledge is the intensity. Sometimes, we get absorbed in our sadness, and sometimes, we jump for joy. We experience this emotional rollercoaster. It is fine until it disrupts your life or the lives of people around you. When it does, in medical terms, it could be bipolar disorder. But at the same time, many people mistake common mood changes for bipolar. It is confusing, right?! Let us clear this up. Let’s ask a psychologist.

We reached out to Dr. Rebecca Johnson Osei, a 2022 ThreeBestRated® award-winning psychologist in Atlanta, Georgia, to learn about Bipolar disorder.

“Bipolar Disorder is often misunderstood in mainstream society to describe someone with mood swings. It is much more complicated than that. However, one way to think about Bipolar Disorder is as something that is energy-based. There are times when energy swings way up, where a person becomes very energetic and often very productive, to a point where it can be harmful or detrimental,” says Dr. Osei.

She further explains, “Think about someone going shopping and spending all of their savings in one day. It is often accompanied by an elevated mood (though not always a happy mood). Then their energy swings way down, they feel tired, have trouble getting out of bed or doing routine things, and feel depressed.”

She also adds that if the mood swings are severe, it is essential to get professional help. Both therapy and psychiatric medication can be extremely helpful in regulating those swings and helping you feel more level.

Bipolar disorders are treatable. All you have to do is to identify the signs and seek timely help.

About Dr. Rebecca Johnson Osei, PSY.D., ABPP – Concierge Psychology

Dr. Osei is a Board Certified Clinical Psychologist who has been in practice since 2012. Since she started practicing, she has worked in several diverse treatment settings with clients from all walks of life. From homeless veterans to public figures, Dr. Osei had the opportunity to assist her clients in shaping the next stages of their lives while coping with complex mental and emotional issues.

Dr. Osei built her practice to reflect the Concierge medical model of practice, and she even named her practice after it. She is a pioneer in concierge therapy, which has gained traction in the years since she opened Concierge Psychology, and has been used by several psychologists throughout the country. While talking about that, she said, “When I first opened my practice, there were only two other psychologists in the country operating by a concierge medical model, and concierge medicine itself was still in its infancy. As a result, I spent a lot of time simply explaining to people how I operated. Now, concierge care has become so mainstream that most clients already know what it is before they even speak to me. It is so exciting to know that so many have seen the value of this approach, which really focuses on providing high quality, person-centered care.”

Dr. Osei has been a recipient of the prestigious ThreeBestRated® award for over four years in a row. Upon winning the award again this year, she said, “It is such an honor to be recognized as one of the Three Best Rated psychologists by a platform trusted by so many consumers. Since opening Concierge Psychology in 2014, one of the first concierge mental health practices in the United States, I have endeavoured to provide top-of-the-line care fused with top-tier customer service, and being awarded this recognition confirms that we continue to meet that goal.”

Looking ahead, Dr. Osei said, “Our practice has recently opened an office in Los Angeles, and we plan to continue to grow in scope and scale, adding additional telehealth states and new services as we grow our team of highly qualified professionals.”
