Congregation members of the Shincheonji Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony, volunteered their time June 15 to prepare food for community members in East Harlem. A dozen congregants visited the New York Common Pantry, where they spent several hours preparing packages of fruit, snacks and groceries.
The staff of the New York Common Pantry was grateful for the help. “We prepare meals for over 150 people per day. None of this is possible without our great volunteers, so we are so appreciative of everything that you do,” said Judy Secon, senior director of programs and operations at New York Common Pantry.
Shincheonji Church members plan to continue giving back to the local community in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, which will likely leave about 1.4 million New Yorkers facing difficulties affording nutritionally adequate food in 2021, according to the Wall Street Journal, which cited data from Feeding America.
“Thank you so much Shincheonji. We are so happy to have had you here. We welcome you back anytime you want to come back,” said Secon from New York Common Pantry.
