The facility would go up on  635 acres of private land located just to the north of the San Juan River and current coal-powered San Juan plants, and would be constructed by Western Energy Partners, LLC.

800 construction jobs are projected to be generated from the plants construction. https://www.constructionreporter.com

“It’s rewarding for us to be able to finally come out publicly with this now and see all the support we’ve been getting in the community,” says Curt Hildebrand, president of the Littleton, Colorado-based firm.

Hildebrand helped develop the Yuba City, California 573 watt Sutter Energy Center 15 years ago.  This would be his firms first public project.

The plant’s development follows on the heels of an agreement between the Public Service Company of New Mexico. the State of New Mexico, and the EPA to reture coal-fired Units 2 and 3 at the current San Juan Generating Station by late 2017.

Though the number of jobs lost with the shutdown of these Units will not be completely offset by the new plant, because gas-fired plants do not produce as many jobs as coal, the $1 billion plant will generate property taxes to support the local economy and community.
