The State of Utah invites the world to explore its many wonders through its “Visit Utah” website. When tourism officials decided to showcase the state’s Dinosaur National Monument on the site, they reached out to one of the people who knows it best: Tyler Callantine, the owner of Dinosaur River Expeditions.

Dinosaur River Expeditions is the only locally-owned river rafting company near Dinosaur National Monument, which is located in northeastern Utah and is home to one of the region’s most impressive collections of dinosaur fossils. The monument stands at the confluence of the Green and Yampa Rivers, which offer thrilling whitewater adventures against the backdrop of Utah’s exquisite red sandstone scenery.

Callantine’s connection to the area runs deep—generations deep. One of his great uncles was a renowned paleontologist and helped excavate the dinosaur quarry that is now part of the national monument. Another great uncle’s name is inscribed on the canyon walls that line the river, his claim to the countless hours he spent exploring them. His grandparents and parents loved the rivers of Uintah County, and Callantine spent a great deal of his youth hiking and rafting in the area.

Callantine said that the invitation from Utah’s Office of Tourism to collaborate on their video featuring a family river rafting trip gave him a chance to share his deep passion for Utah’s land and waterways.

“These videos on the Visit Utah site are seen by people from all over the world who may have never witnessed anything like the rugged West,” said Callantine. “It was an honor to give people an eye into the wildlife and history and beauty of this part of the country.”

The video features Callantine taking a family of five on a four-day rafting trip through Dinosaur National Monument on the Green River through a scenic canyon entrance known as the Gates of Lodore. Callantine narrates the video, which features hikes along rugged sandstone cliffs, views of the “Wall of Bones” fossil collection, campfires at twilight, breathtaking waterfalls, and rushing whitewater.

In his narration, Callantine shares his reverence for the land and his passion for the big western rivers that his company traverses. Callantine and his wife, Jennifer, have 25 years of experience rafting and leading tours on the river. Their company is the only rafting operation in the area that also offers guided hiking trips, which expose visitors to views of towering sandstone arches, wildlife and petroglyphs from ancient cultures—some up to 1200 years old.

Dinosaur River Expeditions offers a wide variety of chartered river trips on the Green and Yampa Rivers along the Colorado-Utah border. The trips range from one to five days. They are all-inclusive, with pick-up and drop-off at local hotels, tasty cook-to-order meals and all necessary rafting gear.
