Pen Boutique Donates Portion of Pink Pen Sales for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Industry: Retail & eCommerce

As a breast cancer survivor, owner of Maryland pen shop gives proceeds to the American Breast Cancer Foundation to help underserved, uninsured patients.

Columbia, MD (PRUnderground) October 16th, 2020

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Leena Shrestha-Menon, founder of Pen Boutique Ltd. in Maryland, is taking it personally. Having survived the disease herself, Leena is committed to helping others do the same with the help of the American Breast Cancer Foundation. This month, she is donating a portion of pen profits to the non-profit organization.

As an unemployed young mother, Leena dreamed of bringing her passion for fine pens to the world. After being turned down by eight financiers, she finally secured a loan and opened a small pen shop in Maryland in 2004. Sixteen years later, that store has grown into a world leader in fine writing instruments and personalized gifts, having been chosen by Montblanc for its Shop-in-Shop and Signature Display experience. The boutique is the only one in the U.S. to feature Graf von Faber-Castell, Cross, Visconti, Waterman, Lamy, and Parker Shop-in-Shop experiences all under one roof.

Throughout October, the Pen Boutique website will sport a new pink color scheme for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The company will donate 1% of total sales, 5% of all pink pen sales, and 50% of “I am a Survivor” Parker Jotter pen sales. The money will be given to the American Breast Cancer Foundation, which is located in Pen Boutique’s hometown of Columbia, Maryland. The ABCF provides education, access, and financial assistance to aid in the early detection, treatment, and survival of breast cancer for underserved and uninsured individuals, regardless of age or gender.

“I had a lot of support on my battle with breast cancer, but I know that not everyone is that lucky. If you are poor, underserved, or uninsured, it can be very difficult to get the care that you need. I want to help end this disparity. Everyone should be able to get the same degree of help for surviving this disease, regardless of their socioeconomic background,” said Leena.

According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer among women. One in 8 U.S. women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. This year, over 42,000 women are expected to die from the disease, but that is a significant improvement over past death tolls. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and improved treatment options.

Pen Boutique is not new to charitable giving. They have been supporting ABCF for the past three years, along with donating a portion of all proceeds from fountain and roller pens to Shri Jeet Handicap Service Center, which provides food, lodging, and education to adolescents with disabilities in Nepal.

Pen Boutique has been awarded the “Emerging Success Award” by the Howard County Chamber of Commerce and the “Best of Columbia” boutique award (for 10 years running).
