Since their launch onto the market, smart watches have had tumultuous ups and downs with less success than their makers’ anticipated. The reasons for this are vast, according to Palmera Apparel’s founder, David Watts.
Telling time has had quite the remarkable history, and wristwatches haven’t been around for more than a few centuries. People looking for a finely crafted or fashionable watch can choose from leading watchmakers, boutiques, and designers. According to Watts, smart watches don’t offer this level of craftsmanship.
Another issue that could be leading to dwindling smart watch sales is practicality and functionality. With a traditional, streamlined watch, people can simply look down and tell the time without taking the time to push a button. There’s no sleep mode or any other issue to prohibit people from just looking down and checking the time.
Watts also notes that people who want smartphone functionality use their smartphones.
In 2014, The Motley Fool reported that the difference between smartphone success and smart watch failure is practicality. Smartphones solved a problem, while smart watches could be chalked up to a novelty item, and novelty items traditionally do not fare well in long-term trends.
In a recent report, Slice Intelligence found that Apple watch sales slid 90% by April of this year. The company was selling 20,000 fewer units daily than when they launched their smart watches.
Watts says that traditional watches offer a seamless solution while smart watches don’t really fill a niche. Plus, wristwatches are simple, elegant, and available in a variety of styles.
“Increasingly people have watches just for fashion and telling the time – even the date isn’t displayed on many watches. Most, if not all, of the complicated functions performed by a smartwatch is satisfied by smartphones, making the cost hard to justify,” said Watts.
At his company, Palmera Apparel, shoppers have access to a designer collection of competitively priced traditional wallets, RFID blocking wallets, and minimalist watches with an Australian flare.
Watts launched Palmera Apparel in 2014 to offer Gold Coast-inspired apparel and accessories to people around the world. All designs are created in-house and products are made all over the globe with premier quality materials and techniques.
While smart watches have captivated the imaginations of many with their futuristic stylings, Watts says that he doesn’t expect smart watches to perform well against traditional watches unless something in their design changes drastically. He says that his customers enjoy the simplicity and essential function of a classic wristwatch.
