An increasing number of young children suffer from allergies, but finding a good treatment can be challenging because allergy shots are not usually recommended for children less than 8. At the Family Allergy Clinic in Arizona, though, young patients can get the benefits of allergy shots with an “oral drops” alternative that is safer and far easier to administer than shots.
Allergist, Dr. Stuart Agren, medical director of the Family Allergy Clinic, was one of the earliest doctors to prescribe the allergy drops in the U.S. when they made their debut in the mid-1980s. Because of the drops’ higher safety profile, they can be prescribed to younger children. For Agren, they filled a gaping need.
“I had many young patients who suffered from severe allergies but my options were very limited, ” said Dr. Agren. “If they were less than 8, the best I could do for them was to prescribe medications like antihistamines and inhalers. Those helped somewhat with the symptoms but they often had side effects, and they didn’t address the allergy itself.”
The drops, on the other hand, were able to treat the underlying allergy without the negative effects of synthetic medications.
The allergy drops are dispensed beneath the tongue where oral mast cells carry them into the bloodstream. Over time, the drops can desensitize children to allergens in the environment so that they stop reacting to them with compromising allergy symptoms.
One of Dr. Agren’s earliest success stories was a toddler with bad enough allergic rhinitis to win him the nickname of “Slimy.”
“This young man’s nose was a perpetual faucet of slime,” said Dr. Agren. “He developed ear infections as a result of his allergies, and he had dark ‘allergic shiners’ under his eyes that often come with sinus congestion.”
Agren said that Slimy turned into a “new kid” after starting on the drops.
“These parents felt like they got their son back,” said Agren. “He could finally be a happy, healthy kid instead of spending his childhood feeling miserable.”
The drops can help with allergies to elements in the environment such as pollen and dust and also to food allergies-a fast-rising problem that now afflicts an average of two students per classroom. The Family Allergy Clinic drops can treat for about 60 of the most common food allergens including eggs, milk, wheat, rice, and soy.
While allergies are commonly associated with hay fever, Dr. Agren said that they can lead to a host of other symptoms including ear infections, eczema, hives and asthma.
