Pets are vulnerable to a multitude of tick-borne illnesses, including Lyme disease. Further, the warmer temperatures of the past winter have created a more hospitable environment for the early arrival of ticks.

D.C. Mosquito Squad recommends taking the following 10 steps to minimize your pets’ risk of exposure to these small parasites.

#1  Use spot on or oral medications carefully to control and kill ticks:

#2  Keep your pet healthy:  Ticks are more likely to attach themselves to pets with low immune systems or dirty fur.

#3  Bathe your pet with a medicated shampoo:  Medicated shampoos can work wonders for your pets and will have cause ticks to have an instant reaction when the come in contact with it.

#4  Keep your lawn clean:  Ticks live and breed it cold shaded areas.  So by keeping your lawn clean you’ll lower the chance of a breeding tick population.

#5  Catch ticks before they have a chance attach:  After outdoor play examine your pets for ticks.  This is a simple step that can make a huge difference, but it often overlooke.

#6  Keep your pets indoors as much as possible:  One of the best ways to combat ticks is to limit exposure.  So avoid letting your pet roam outside for long periods of time.

#7  Purchase a tick collar:  Just make sure to put it on your pet properly.

#8  Consider vaccinating your pet:  Vaccines are available that can help prevent lyme disease-causing bacteria. This method can lower your pets risk of contracting lyme disease.
