A collective of New York City-based Puerto Rican organizers and individuals will hold a general assembly Saturday, August 17, 2019 unveiling an agenda to support Puerto Ricans on the island. Focused on the key demands expressed at previous assemblies, the New York version of the ‘asamblea del pueblo’ aims to support Boricuas on the island as they construct a new Puerto Rico from the ground up.
After historic protests blanketed Puerto Rico forcing a change in governorship, the transformative movement followed up their uprising by convening in public spaces. Key issues have emerged at these assemblies, including Medicare cliff, fiscal board, schools’ closings, rezoning, debt cancellation, Jones Act, among many other issues. “The Puerto Rican Diaspora plays a major role in demanding accountability from those politically oppressing and violating international human rights laws. The Diaspora will utilize our stateside position to repeal unjust laws such as Jones Act and the cancellation of this odious fabricated illegal debt,” says community leader, activist and humanitarian, Inarú Guara.
“The ‘Asamblea Popular Boricua’ is not a political party, nor a platform for politicians, candidates, government representatives, or particular institutions. This is a public space for the people. Boricuas of different perspectives, religious backgrounds, and political ideologies will come together to help Puerto Rico by following the lead of Boricuas on the island under the banner that another Puerto Rico is possible,” says artist, athlete and activist, Power Malu. “Our mission is to listen to our fellow Puerto Ricans and answer one question: what can we do from the Diaspora? We must work in solidarity with our people,” says writer, activist and organizer, Marlena Fitzpatrick.
