A new full service, print newspaper recently launched in California’s redwood country north of San Francisco, going up against the conventional wisdom that print publications are an ever-diminishing resource in today’s media landscape.
In a series of one-minute videos produced by JK Turner Video, the editors of the Mad River Union, based in Arcata, California talk about what it means to be a local journalist in terms of reporting style, covering neighbors, friends and advertisers as well as the challenges of keeping a small newspaper relevant in the digital age.
Arcata is located just north of the city of Eureka in coastal Humboldt County, and is home to Humboldt State University. The Mad River Union newspaper continues a long history of independent journalism in the region, and is a merger of the Arcata Eye and McKinleyville Press newspapers.
