Apex Insight has published new research on the TV production markets in Europe and the US. Reports are currently available covering France, Italy, the Nordic countries (Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland), Poland, UK and US as well as a Competitive Landscape report which profiles and benchmarks the super-indies. Further reports are in preparation on Germany, the Netherlands and Spain, along with a combined report covering the entire European TV production market.
In most markets, TV viewing levels have started to fall amongst younger audiences but are still increasing for older viewers, while OTT continues to advance and TV advertising spending is recovering. Growth has been strongest in the US, where the economy has performed best and TV advertising has been buoyant, helped by the 2016 election and Olympics, and the UK, which has bounced back strongly, helped by greater certainty following BBC charter renewal. Some markets, such as Italy, Norway, Finland, have been impacted by problems at major broadcasters.
The TV Production Super-indies Competitive Landscape report contains in-depth profiles of the eight major super-indies which have grown through acquisitions and organic growth and account for an increasing share of global production spend: All3Media, Banijay, Endemol Shine, FremantleMedia, ITV Studios, Red Arrow, Tinopolis and Warner Bros International TV Production. The profiles include an overview of global operations, key shows, financial performance, acquisitions and a summary of recent news. Benchmarks include financial performance and scope of operations.
Key findings include: continued industry consolidation with mergers and acquisitions between the super-indies including Banijay & Zodiak, Endemol & Shine and ITV & Talpa; large global media groups becoming significant investors in the super-indies to gain access to valuable content, such as 21st Century Fox, ITV, Warner, Bertelsmann, DiAgostini, Vivendi and ProSiebenSat.1; Endemol Shine remains the market leader, but its lead has decreased as some of its key formats have aged and several senior managers have departed post-merger; EBITA margins of the leading groups average around 10%.
The reports are based on data from industry and company sources as well as interviews with those involved in the market. Findings are presented clearly and concisely with extensive use of charts and tables to illuminate points and support conclusions.
They are intended for TV production companies themselves as well as private equity and other investors, banks, analysts, consultants, government / regulators and other parties with interests in the industry.
This is the fourth edition of Apex Insight’s TV production research. Our other work relevant to the TV production market has included consulting services for the management of, and investors in, clients including the BBC, Banijay, Endemol and Channel 4.
