My name is Demetrios Loukas and I’m a British Lyme disease sufferer. As well as being a member of an Anglo-American musical group called Square Halo, I lead a science-based lobby group called The FIGHT LYME NOW Campaign with British research scientist Dr. Chris Newton, German Lyme disease specialist Dr. Armin Schwarzbach and British General Practitioner Dr. Michael Wetzler.

We are trying to raise awareness of Lyme disease, how it’s contracted and the unreliability of the current test systems used worldwide to detect the infection.

We are also lobbying for the recognition of chronic Lyme disease (which is currently dismissed by the international medical establishment) and the need for effective treatment for both acute and chronic Lyme disease including Lyme disease co-infections (which are currently not considered, much less treated).

I contracted Lyme disease back in 2005 when I was training to be a primary school teacher in Oxfordshire, England. I was bitten by a Lyme disease-infected tick on a school trip to a farm but unfortunately for me, the infection went undiagnosed and untreated for 8 years. During those 8 years, my health deteriorated and the infection festered, eventually attacking my heart and brain, nearly taking my life.

Over the past 6 years, I have collaborated remotely with Minneapolis-based African American music producer and graduate of the McNally Smith College of Music, Treyvonce Ambers-Moore, to create The Lyme Years; an album which ultimately serves to raise awareness of Lyme disease through the sharing of my story.
