Nerdology News — Ford has recently revealed that its latest developments are designed to keep drivers safer, while also avoiding those hefty speeding tickets. The car manufacturing giant recently announced that is hoping to release a car that will read speed limit signs and automatically slow down. The car is still in testing and developmental stages, but Ford says that it is the perfect answer for speedy drivers who can’t seem to abide by the posted speed limits.
According to a Ford representative, the newest edition of the popular S-Max car, will have “a new technology that scans traffic signs and adjusts the throttle to help drivers stay within legal speed limits and avoid fines.” This new system, aptly entitled the ‘intelligent speed limiter,’ was unveiled by Ford of Europe in Germany. However, rest assured U.S. citizens, the intelligent speed limiter will soon be available worldwide.
Ford described the system in further detail, saying that it has the ability to recognize traffic signs, and adjust the car’s system accordingly. It is important to note that the system doesn’t slam the breaks. Instead, in a press release, Ford noted that, ” the [intelligent speed limiter] system does not apply the brakes, but smoothly controls engine torque by electronically adjusting the amount of fuel delivered.” In this way, the system can help drivers avoid hefty speeding fines.
In case you are worried about the safety risks of slowing down whenever your car passes a speed limit sign, Ford has developed the system so that drivers can temporarily override the system. If a driver notices that the car’s intelligent speed limiter system is engaged, he can “override the system by pressing firmly on the accelerator.”
Ford’s latest technology goes hand-in-hand with the driverless or autonomous cars that are expected to be released to the general public in the near future. Google, Nokia, and Audi have all been experimenting with driverless cars. The companies hope to create safer driving environments for both passengers, drivers, and other motorists.
These advances, combined with Ford’s latest technologies show the incredible innovation that exists within the auto industry.
