Nanie Chioma Memeh knows the meaning of a name. At just eleven months old, she was sent from her birthplace of New York to live with her father’s family in Nigeria until she was 17 years old. When she reunited with her birth parents in Seattle, Washington, in 2006, she learned that she had another name – Nanie – and a past life in America that she’d gone without knowing for all of those years.
A few years later, Memeh got the idea for a children’s book, and she’s bringing this idea to Kickstarter today.
‘My Name is Nanie’ is about a girl who goes back in time to discover the meaning behind her name. This journey takes readers over states, countries, and continents to find the meaning of her name, but it also stirs children to want to learn about their own names. The story encourages children to seek out their own story while also reminding readers that their names have significance.
“Names are given out of love. Whether short, long, foreign, common, easily pronounceable or not; each name is beautifully unique because we are, as individuals,” said Memeh.
Memeh hopes her book will help boost self esteem and tolerance in kids while also showing them that names have great diversity across nations. Also, Memeh says her story can be used to help parents gift their kids the story behind their names.
The Kickstarter campaign is an all or nothing campaign, and if the $3000 goal is met, the book will be published and pledgers will receive their own copies of ‘My Name is Nanie’, kids face shields, adult face shields, and more.
The Kickstarter campaign, which has approximately two weeks left before closing, can be found at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mynameisnanie/my-name-is-nanie?ref=user_menu.
