Charlotte, NC (PRUnderground) October 6th, 2020

Motherhood Understood, a trusted online pregnancy and postpartum mental health advocacy platform and community, will launch Maternal Mental Health in Minutes, a virtual educational video hub. Easy to understand and accessible 24/7, the eighteen videos cover key topics and treatments of all pregnancy and postpartum mental health illnesses. The building of the video hub was made possible by the Impact Fund Grant that Schwartz applied for and won last October funded by Janssen, the pharmaceutical arm of Johnson & Johnson.

Maternal Mental Health in Minutes (MMHM) is a central location for women and their families to go to get all the education they need about pregnancy and postpartum mental health illnesses and potential treatments. The main goal is to educate the expecting mother (and partner) before she has her baby and potentially suffers a mental health issue. The MMHM educational videos are free and accessible to everyone on the Motherhood Understood YouTube channel.

“Motherhood Understood was already an online resource and community of over 75,000 women affected by pregnancy and postpartum mental health illnesses, so creating this was our clear next step,” said Jen Schwartz, founder of Motherhood Understood and creator of MMHM.

This resource is needed now more than ever considering the mental health effects that the current pandemic is having on new mothers. Researchers from the University of Alberta recently conducted a study that found that currently (during the pandemic) 72% of new mothers felt moderate to high anxiety, a 43% increase from the number of new mothers reporting anxiety before the pandemic. Additionally, 74% of mothers reported feeling mentally worse since the Covid crisis began according to Motherly’s 2020 “State of Motherhood” survey results.

“This is a tremendously comprehensive and cohesive project—touching on all aspects of PMADS,” said Jessica Zucker, Ph.D, psychologist and writer specializing in women’s reproductive and maternal mental health, and the creator of the #IHadaMiscarriage campaign. “Having navigated postpartum depression and anxiety herself, Jen is a trusted link and advocate between mothers, families, and medical professionals.”

Video topics include, but are not limited to: Symptoms and risk factors for each pregnancy and postpartum mental health illness, types of mental health professionals and treatments, medication including safe medications that can be taken while pregnant or breastfeeding, experiencing a mental health illness after infertility or loss, and Information and support ideas for partners, family, and friends.
