The Las Cruces East Mesa Public Safety Campus ground-breaking and construction are expected to begin by May of this year.  East Mesa’s population today is 46,000, double the population twenty years ago, making this Las Cruces’ fastest growing area.  the project is expected to yield substantial construction jobs for the area.

The 50-acre campus contract, with a pricetag of $950,889, was won by Las Cruces-based Williams Design Group, and will house two substations.  The City of Las Cruces were succesful at conducting a $20 million bond sale  last summer, with $10 million of that slated for construction of the campus.

The site was also rezoned and is currently under a recreational public purchase lease with the Bureau of Land Management, to facilitate its development.  It will be the 8th substation in Las Cruces, referred to as “Substation Number 8.”  It is the first station to be built in 25 years, since construction of the downtown fire station.

The 346-acre area surrounding the campus will be developed to include a network of trails, open space, native habitat, and non-motorized mountain bicycle trail areas. Longer term, an access road will also be built onto the property.
