Making Lemonade Takes Middle-Aged Divorcée from Art School in Georgia to Romantic Italy
Industry: Books
On her 50th birthday, Missouri Rothman, did not get the Tahiti vacation or the surprise birthday party she expected.

Making Lemonade by new women’s fiction author Muriel Pritchett is all about putting your life back together after a nasty divorce and following your own unfulfilled artistic dreams – even if it means journeying alone to Italy for unexpected adventure and romance.
Making Lemonade is the story of Missouri Rothman, who doesn’t get a surprise party or a Tahiti vacation on her 50th birthday. Instead, she totals her car, loses her beloved job at the university and her professor husband of 32 years asks for a divorce to marry his post-doc student with the 18-inch waist and perky boobs.
Half a century old, jobless and with only a high school diploma, Missouri soon realizes she needs to take control of her life. In order to make lemonade out of the sour lemons of a failed marriage, she ends her self-pity party, rekindles long-buried dreams of art school and searches for the courageous, capable woman hidden deep inside herself. What better place to do this than in Italy — a land of art, beauty, good wine, great food and love.
Pritchett said she created the story of a strong middle-aged protagonist when she and her friends were all turning 50 and older. “Here we were with children in college and aging parents. We were dealing with empty nests, perimenopause, colonoscopies, mid-life crises and saving for retirement. Meanwhile, it seemed like most of the women’s fiction books being published were about twenty-somethings trying to find the perfect guy online.”
Making Lemonade is the first of several stories Pritchett has written about strong middle-age protagonists and their adventures. “I want middle-aged women to have something to read and relate to besides the AARP magazine.”
Pritchett, who resides in Athens, Georgia, began her writing career as a freelance magazine writer, while living in Japan and Germany. A former daily newspaper reporter, she also worked many years in public relations, and wrote and directed her own plays for local performing groups. Currently an art student at the University of Georgia, Pritchett spent one semester studying art in the Study Abroad Program in Cortona, Italy. She is well-known for her humorous clay sculptures.
Making Lemonade is scheduled for release today, December 15, 2016.
