Across small-town New Mexico, MainStreet renovation and renewal programs have sprung up, creating opportunities within the New Mexico construction industry.

According to New Mexico MainStreet Director  Rich Williams, there are currently 27  MainStreet programs underway across the state, tripling the number from 2002.

There are MainStreet programs in every state across the U.S. New Mexico’s MainStreet Program has generated over 11,400 new jobs, supported creation of at least 200 start-up businesses, and has generated a return of more than $50 for every dollar spent by the state, according to last year’s report from the National Trust MainStreet Center.

Clovis and Artesia, both small New Mexican towns, have initiated MainStreet Projects.  Clovis MainStreet won a $350,000 MainStreet grant in 2001, which it used to revitalize Hotel Clovis.  Currently the nonprofit organization is using MainStreet funds to renovate the Lyceum Theatre.

Artesia’s local MainStreet group has been working to revitalize the Heritage Walkway, an urban park.  Its efforts have integrated a great deal of art including bronze sculptures depicting the historic cattle drives of the American southwest.
