Students from Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School in Brookville organized and hosted a Christmas party for the residents of Creedmoor Psychiatric Center in Queens Village. Planning the celebration took several weeks, as students wrapped gifts, prepared homemade baked goods, and planned a variety show to share their talents with the residents. The 57 students’ gifts included everyday essentials such as socks, hair ties and puzzle books.
Student dancers from the Long Island Lutheran Day School at St. Paul, located in East Northport, presented their annual performance of The Nutcracker. This long- time favorite tells the story of Maria and Fritz who, on Christmas Eve, receive a special visit from their godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer. After falling asleep, Maria has a magical dream featuring sugarplum fairies, battling mice, Russian dancers, floating snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and a Chinese dragon that winds its way around the floor. Mother Ginger hides candy canes under her skirt, which emerge to dance as well.
Following The Nutcracker, the Day School’s kindergarteners entertained an appreciative audience of parents, grandparents and friends with their interpretation of the first Christmas. The cast of characters included angels, kings, shepherds, Joseph, Mary, and baby Jesus.
