Long Island Lutheran, a K-12 private school with campuses in Brookville and East Northport, NY offering exceptional education opportunities for nearly 70 years, has attracted students from overseas since 1999. Beginning this year, however, Long Island Lutheran has expanded its international offerings by providing a “home away from home,” school-managed dormitory for nearly 50 Chinese and Korean students. It is also expanding the program to include students from Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Vietnam, and throughout the United States.
“Long Island Boarding is a ‘home away from home’ for international students who attend LuHi. Our focus is on creating a loving environment for students to grow friendships and bonds that will last a lifetime,” said Brenda Varela, Managing Director of Long Island Boarding. “At Long Island Boarding, our students have the support of a family, while embracing the dorm habitat. With a variety of different experiences and excursions, our students truly get a taste of the ‘American experience’.”
The program provides housing in luxury apartments in the gold coast town of Glen Cove, close to Long Island Sound beaches, and right next to the Long Island Railroad with access to NYC about 30 minutes away. Students enjoy amenities such as a well-furnished Common Room, gym, outdoor pool, in-house movie theater, pool table, big screen TV, vending machines, concierge and 24-hour security measures.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in co-curriculars and community service activities through LuHi which enrolls over 600 students in total.
Dr. Andrew Gove, Head of School, said, “We are looking forward to the 2016-17 school year because detailed boarding-student feedback show that students are more satisfied than ever with their boarding experience.”
Long Island Boarding provides daily transportation to and from classes and extra-curricular activities, including school clubs and events, a two-bedroom luxury apartment housing up to 5 students, 3 meals a day and weekend trips.
“Before I came to America, my biggest concern was whether I would be able to develop sincere friendships with the other students,” said Hannah Yoon. “I soon realized that I did not have to worry about anything at Long Island Lutheran.”
“While staying at Long Island Boarding, I was able to make lasting friendships with students from other countries,” said Hannah. “I was able to experience diverse cultures that I had never encountered before. Furthermore, my friends and I, while in the dorm together, supported one another. We have formed a deep bond, and this has given me life-long friends that I can count on. Now, I cannot imagine my life without these friendships and I will never forget the memories from this past school year.”
Friendships and amenities are important to supporting students through Long Island Lutheran’s rigorous academic program. In 2015, the school placed 100% of its graduating seniors into higher education with 90% of the students accepted into their first and/or second choice schools. LuHi students score 133 points above New York State average SAT score, and 3 points over the national ACT average. The school offers 13 Advanced Placement Courses annually.
