With Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson poised to become the nation’s first Black woman on the Supreme Court, her credentials have been in the limelight — along with her style. It’s this bold, individual style that LNO Greek is capitalizing on with its release of customized apparel for members of historically black sororities.
LNO Greek founder Arndreya Price is a second-generation member of Delta Sigma Theta, one of the four historically black Divine Nine sororities. She started LNO (Like No Other) Greek after feeling frustrated with the lack of Greekwear choices for sorority sisters.
“When I pledged Delta Sigma Theta back in 2006, it was a moment I’d waited for most of my life, but I had to wear an oversized men’s DST t-shirt because that’s what was available. It didn’t represent my personality or style, and that bothered me,” said Price. “My goal with LNO Greek is to give my sisters around the world the opportunity to rep their sorority while showcasing their unique style and body type.”
LNO Greek’s Delta Sigma Theta apparel includes fitted t-shirts, off-the-shoulder sweatshirts, and flowy blouses. And in honor of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s Supreme Court nomination, LNO is rolling out new Greekwear, including tunic dresses, split neckline tunics, and longline tops.
While Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson’s credentials as a public defender and judge have captured headlines since she was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court, so has her style. Her locked hair has mobilized members of the natural hair community, who say they have long awaited a day when they could see themselves in someone on the nation’s highest court.
Others have lauded Judge Jackson for owning a style that has been stigmatized in the past. The term dreadlocks was coined by British colonists who referred to the matted locs of Kenyan warriors as “dreadful,” and there have been cases of employment discrimination against locked hair. Tides have turned with the CROWN Act, which was approved by the House last month to protect against race-based hair discrimination.
“Judge Jackson represents ongoing progress to honor the distinctive styles of different races and cultures,” said Price. “We’re following her lead with our new apparel that tells Divine Nine sisters that they should be proud of their body and their personality and not have to fit a certain mold.”
With the addition of their newest releases, LNO Greek has Delta Sigma Theta sorority shirts and jackets in a full range of looks, from casual and sporty, to chic and sophisticated, and they come in sizes to fit every body type. While LNO’s apparel is currently designed for Delta Sigma Theta sisters, Price has plans to release apparel branded with insignia from all of the Divine Nine sororities.
