Collins focuses on individualizing attention for both addict and partner in order to bring the couple back together. Emotions run high at the beginning, making separate therapy for the addict and the partner crucial to keep the relationship in one piece.
Collins states the best way to address the feelings of pain, mistrust, anger, or even denial is to ensure the partner is aware that the addiction was not their fault. Giving the partner back their self-esteem, and the addict a new sense of personal control, along with tackling any unnecessary guilt, is part of the healing process.
Significant mistakes are made when therapists rush to place both addict and partner into a joint therapy, according to Collins. Only when they are civil can disclosure, or sharing truths and secrets, occur. Once this painful process has been worked through, trust can be rebuilt, and the relationship can come back together.
