Hotel Direct are offering London theatre breaks to see ‘Pygmalion’ at the Garrick Theatre, London before it closes on 3rd September.
The typical rags-to-riches story is the basic storyline in ‘Pygmalion’. It is the tale of young Cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins, the Professor of Phonetics who attempts to pass her off as a lady in society. The audience is left constantly guessing as to where their relationship is going, will they, won’t they?
The play has been incredibly popular since its beginnings in 1914, and has also been transformed into the musical ‘My Fair Lady’, which originally starred Julie Andrews and last appeared in the West End in 2006. Film versions of the two have also been made; most well known is probably the 1964 version of ‘My Fair Lady’ with Audrey Hepburn.
George Bernard Shaw, the author of the play, entertains and engages the audience with a strong critique of sexual politics, education limits and class structures of his day. The beauty of ‘Pygmalion’ is that, though set in the Victorian era, the stories and themes within it are still relevant today. Despite the serious issues there are still plenty of laughs, which is tribute to Bernard Shaw’s wit and timeless humour.
The show’s closing night is 3rd September and the performers dedicated to giving it a good send off are Kara Tointon from ‘Eastenders’ and winner of ‘Strictly Come Dancing’, and impressionist Alastair McGowan, who was nominated for an Olivier award for his performance in ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, will play Henry Higgins.
