The City of Las Cruces in southern New Mexico will experience a boost in the construction industry in 2015, thanks to New Mexico State University, which is planning a new three-story College of Osteopathic Medicine–news it just released to the media last month.
The Burrell College of Osteopathic Medicine design is expected to look a lot like the modernistic and spacious Skeen Hall, also on the NMSU campus. Skeen hall was built in honor of New Mexico Congressman Martin Skeen, and opened in 2000.
The American Osteopathic Association’s Commission on Osteopathic Accreditation is planning a site visit in October, for which Burrell College officials are preparing–interviewing candidates for top level positions.
“The latest information I have as to when they will break ground and start construction is around January 15,” reports Justin Bannister, assistant director of news with NMSU.
“We already have a college of health and special services where we train nurses and public health officials,” continues Bannister. “But the Burrell College is going to be an entirely new experience for our campus—we have never had a medical school that graduates doctors.
Entrepreneur Dan Burrell, former CEO of Rosemont Realty, has committed $85 million to build the project at NMSU’s Roosevelt Park. The initiator of the project was John Hummer, developer and founding CEO of the Las Cruces-based Mountain View Regional Medical Center, in partnership with Dr. George Mychaskiw, who will serve as Burrell’s Dean and Chief Academic Officer.
“This is an outstanding day for New Mexico, as this private-public partnership will benefit the health and well-being of people across our state, and the region, by addressing our severe shortage of primary care physicians, especially among New Mexico’s underserved, rural populations,” Garrey Carruthers, NMSU President, when the plan was finally announced on July 14, 2014.
Mychaskiw, said that by “facilitating the pathway of education,” the new college hopes to “increase physician diversity and deliver more culturally competent care in the region.”
Perrich/Dekker/Sabatini, a design firm based out of Albuquerque, is currently on board to design the college, which will house two auditoriums, break-out classrooms, a simulation center, anatomy lab, cadaver lab, bookstore and administrative offices.
“Once you get the applicant status, which is what we have right now, you have five years to get accredited,” says Hummer. “But we are optimistic: our goal is to have the school opened in a two-year time cycle.”
