On Saturday, 9/9, KOA Chincoteague Island will host the first annual 9/11 Tribute and “Almost 1K” Memorial Walk/Run.  The free community event will feature music, food, and a variety of activities.  It will be held from 8:00am to 1:00pm at the KOA Chincoteague campgrounds at 6742 Maddox Blvd. on Chincoteague Island.

“We believe that the best way to unite our community on 9/11 is to present an event that brings military, community service, and local residents together in a positive way,” says Nicholas Hewitt, Programs Director for Navy Morale, Welfare & Recreation.  “We’re looking forward to a wonderful morning of tributes, togetherness, and family fun for all participants.”

The event will consist of the following activities:

  • 8:00am – Opening ceremony and benediction
  • 9:11am – “Almost 1K” Walk/Run, which will consist of a 2,996 foot course (representing one foot for everyone lost on 9/11/01)
  • 11:00am – Kanjam and cornhole tournaments, as well as other family competitions and activities
  • 1:00pm – Awards and closing ceremony
  • 1:00pm – VA Space Academy bottle rocket launch, featuring instruction from NASA Sounding Rocket Operations Contract for kids who want to build their own rockets

Free t-shirts will be available to the first 200 participants at the event.  Kids who wish to build bottle rockets should bring two empty 2-liter soda bottles.  Food trucks will be on site serving a variety of local fare, and The Tiki Bar Band will provide entertainment.

Discounted hotel room rates for event attendees will be available at Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott Chincoteague Island.
