When travel journalist Nushin Huq left Utah’s Dinosaur National Monument two years ago after a brief visit, she knew she had unfinished business with the landmark. There were rivers to travel, dinosaur fossils to see, and sandstone cliffs to explore.

Last summer, she and her family returned to the monument for a four-day Gates of Lodore chartered river rafting trip with Dinosaur River Expeditions. The article chronicling her reunion has been featured this month on Utah’s premier tourism website.

Dinosaur River Expeditions is the only locally-owned and operated rafting outfitter for the rivers that flow through Dinosaur National Monument. They feature one to five-day rafting adventures on the Green and Yampa Rivers. They are also the only company in the area to offer guided hiking trips around the national monument, which feature views of ancient petroglyphs, natural arches, and fossilized dinosaur footprints.

Huq’s article, entitled “Two Trips, Two Worlds, Two Years Apart,” details her return to Dinosaur National Monument in northeastern Utah two years after she visited it on a brief day trip two years prior. This time, Huq and her three children took a four-day rafting trip on the Green River led by Dinosaur River Expeditions owner, Tyler Callantine.

Huq served as the Houston correspondent for Bloomberg law prior to becoming a freelance writer covering energy, the environment and outdoors. She frequently blogs about national parks and discovered Dinosaur National Monument on a trip between Arches National Park and Grand Teton National Park. Her article about her family rafting trip was chosen to appear this month on VisitUtah.com, the official travel and visitor information site for the state of Utah.

In her article, Huq recounts traveling from Colorado to the Utah side of Dinosaur National Monument by way of the Green River under the capable guidance of Tyler Callantine, who has been traveling the Green and Yampa Rivers around the DNM since he was a boy.

Callantine said that his company offers the most local experience of any of the other rafting outfitters in the area.

“My guides and I are locals and have many years of experience on this river,” said Callantine. “We help our guests understand the geology and the wildlife that they see so they feel more connected to the environment here. We also share some of our family ties so they know why this place matters so much to us.”

Huq’s article details a spot along the river where Callantine’s great uncle-a wildlife surveyor for the Fish and Wildlife Department-inscribed his name on a rock face decades ago. She also refers to another of Callantine’s great uncles-a renowned paleontologist who helped excavate Carnegie Quarry and its wealth of dinosaur fossils, many of which are on display at Dinosaur National Monument today.

Huq’s article lauds Dinosaur River Expeditions’ customized Green River guided river rafting trips, which cater to the interests of family members of different ages. The guides set Huq’s 16-year-old son up in a kayak that he rowed alongside the raft during much of the expedition for a personalized adventure. Excerpts from the trip are featured in a brief video on VisitUtah.com

Dinosaur River Expeditions provides all-inclusive trips that include hotel pick-up and drop-off, tasty meals cooked by expedition guides, and all of the necessary rafting gear.
