Jim Chancellor, served as a door gunner with the 119th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam. On April 21st. of 1970 his ship was shot down in the jungles of Vietnam. Because of what happened that day in Vietnam both in the air and on the ground he was awarded the Purple Heart and a heroism medal for Valor. When returning home from Vietnam in 1970, he became a veteran’s activist. Because of his steadfast commitment to his fellow veterans over the years Mr. Chancellor was inducted into the Indiana Veterans Hall of Fame in 2016. He is a published author of the novel entitled “ Til Death Due Us Part”. As a sophisticated public speaker he has been featured on the same agenda as Ronald Reagan, Barack Obama, Bob Hope and many more. He speaks on the impact of war. Jim offers a very expressive pro-presenter presentation on PTSD where his personal battles with addictions, anger, depression, and isolation are openly shared.
He conducts post-traumatic stress disorder ‘PTSD’ workshops in high schools and colleges to illustrate the effects of war on the veteran. Jim is driven to educate our youth on the full cost of war, not just in dollars and cents but on the toll it has on our heroes psychologically. His main focus is on today’s students since they are our decision makers of tomorrow. The American Veterans Collection feels it is extremely important that the students understand what it means to put boots on the ground anywhere in this world. It will be his greatest achievement if there is continuous schooling for our students particularly, on the positive as well as the negative effects of war.
The PTSD presentation is influential and has a lasting effect on all that see it. To the best of his understanding, anyone who is affected with PTSD will not hesitate to join hands with him over the project and fight for our heroes that continue to fight the war long after they return home.
The American Veterans Collection Inc. is a 501 (C) (3) not for profit corporation that works diligently to ensure that the homeless veterans who live within Northwest Indiana, have food, clothing, shelter, and opportunities (either job opportunities, training, access to medical and counseling facilities) made readily available to them, for the transformation of their lives.
Jim knows there are many combat veterans both old and young that suffer from the effects of PTSD, and he believes he can help. Jim always says to any struggling veteran, “ I can’t help you change your life, but if you take my hand I will help you stand up”. He continuous “Then pledge to me, veteran to veteran, that you want to change your life and then I can help you change your life.”
Jim believes working together we can scale the hurdle and challenges together. As well as the fact that we all can lead a better, happy and transformed life.
