Many people do not know that biotechnology is currently advancing much faster than digital technology. The revival of extinct species is imminent based on current research by scientists.
“We all watched it in the movie, Jurassic Park, and now it’s about to become a reality. Only with much less blood and gore,” the enthusiastic Mr. Jeff Cohen joked during his talk at a recent investment forum in New York. “Much respect and credit has to be given where it’s due and although you may think it’s an outrageous idea, the technology speaks for itself,” said Cohen.
Although many researchers have been working on this concept for years, Stewart Brand, an American writer, brought his ideas expressively to the limelight much recently through the Revive and Restore Foundation. He is not the only one to openly attempt de-extinction. Back in 2003, scientists made headway by cloning an extinct Iberian Wild goat using DNA from frozen goatskin. Although the animal died just ten minutes after birth, it was still quite an achievement.
The talk of de-extinction has sparked a lot of controversy especially with Stewart Brand saying, “We cannot guarantee that the results will be perfect and nature isn’t perfect either. We can only attempt to create close proximities to existing species.”
The idea of de-extinction has been met with a lot of moral and ethical question, the most concerning being, “should we be playing God?” However, Brand has justified his ideas by presenting four concrete reasons as to why his foundation is a good idea. De-extinction is aimed at preserving biodiversity and genetic diversity, restoring diminishing ecosystems, undoing the harm that humans have caused and preventing extinctions in the future.
“The next ten years is going to be a true test of what we can achieve through biotechnology and I believe that the test will be passed considering what we see today.” The investment expert continued.
The latest evidence of de-extinction is the growing of the embryo of a frog species that was extinct back in 1983.
