Irena Zubcevic selected for the Empowered Woman Award by IAOTP

Irena Zubcevic, Director 1, Intergovernmental Policy and Review Branch at the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs was recently chosen to receive the Empowered Woman of the Year Award for 2021 given by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). Her exemplary role as a female professional displays her influence, capability, and proficiency.

With over 3 decades of professional experience in sustainable development and international relations Irena Zubcevic has certainly proven herself as an extraordinary professional and expert in the field. She is a dynamic, visionary and results-driven leader who has demonstrated success not just through diplomacy and international relations and sustainable development, but she also successfully engages and implements her projects and programs, while assessing and following through in each endeavor she is challenged with.

Ms. Zubcevic’s key areas of expertise include Intergovernmental Processes, Sustainable Development, Rule of Law, Governance, Policy and Strategy Development at National Regional and International Levels, Advocacy and Outreach. Working alongside many high-level functionaries which include, Heads of States and Governments, Ministers, CEOs in private sector, also many media platforms, foundations, academia and civil society in general. Along with these efforts, she has contributed to various reports and authored publications.

Ms. Zubcevic’s most current area of focus is on the United Nations high-level political forum on sustainable development. Ms. Zubcevic is supporting countries as well as stakeholders ranging from the private sector to civil society in preparation of voluntary national reviews on implementation of sustainable development goals. She has put strategies into play for a wide range of sustainable development issues such as climate, oceans, cities, sustainable consumption and production and transport.

Her impressive repertoire of prior roles include experience as the  Director 1 of the Ocean and Climate Branch of the Division for Sustainable Development in the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs and as a Senior Sustainable Development Officer. She also held positions such as:  Adviser to the Ministry of Information of the Republic of Croatia, and the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia.

Before embarking on her current career path, Ms. Zubcevic earned a Bachelor of Science in Linguistics and a Master of Science in Humanities from the University of Zagreb. She rounded her studies at Harvard University with a Certificate for Senior Managers in Government. Ms. Zubcevic is fluent in English, French, Spanish and Italian. She has been trained in a variety of different languages and also has knowledge of several other languages.

Throughout her illustrious career, Ms. Zubcevic has received many awards and accolades and has been recognized in numerous publications and magazines worldwide for her outstanding leadership roles and commitment to her field.  This year she will be featured on the famous Reuters Building in Times Square and will grace the front cover of T.I.P. (Top Industry Professional) Magazine.  She is also being considered for an exclusive interview on T.I.P. Radio by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). She will be honored at IAOTP’s Annual Awards Gala being held at the NYC Plaza Hotel, for her selection not only as Empowered Woman of the Year, but also for her selection for the Lifetime Achievement Award and Top Chief of the Year in Sustainability. She upholds memberships with the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, the National Association of Professional Women, Who’s Who of Professional Women, Marquis Who’s Who and Pride of CCS.

Aside from her successful career, Ms. Zubcevic is an active Board Member for the Women’s Soroptimist International of New York City. She has been recognized by various National and Local Charities and Schools for her excellence.

Looking back, Ms. Zubcevic attributes her success to her persistence, her ability to understand different cultures and mentors with whom she has been honored to collaborate with. She has a true passion for her service and high integrity in all of her professional and personal endeavors. When not working, she enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.  For the future, she hopes to continue to make a difference in people’s lives anyway that she can.
