The Pest Management professionals at Imperial Pest Prevention located in Daytona Beach, FL. always seem to be a step ahead of the industry. They have now announced they will add Infrared Thermography as an assisting tool to the vast majority of Techniques they already incorporate into the WDO (Wood Destroying Organism) inspections they currently do during home inspections. It appears that with an average of over two hundred WDO (Wood Destroying Organism) inspections a month for Florida’s Volusia and Flagler Counties, Imperial Pest Prevention has edged out its competitors. Now for the big question some of you may be wondering………. What is a WDO Inspection?

“Good question! Typically when a home purchaser decides to borrow money from a bank, they will typically be required to have a WDO inspection done from a licensed pest control company. State to state will have different variations of what they consider Wood Destroying Organisms. Since we are in the state of Florida I will focus on those and only those. There are five total wood destroying organisms we look for in the state of Florida. They are as follows” stated Imperial Pest Prevention Spokesperson/ Certified Entomologist Jonathan Stoddard. He also went on to list the five as Subterranean Termites, Drywood Termites, Old House Borers, Powder Post Beetles, Wood Decaying Fungus and instructed that anyone looking for more in depth information should visit the blog post they have up on their webpage. Now for another big question some of you may be wondering……….. what is infrared thermography?

Well, let’s just say first off it is not x-ray!, It is not a moisture meter, and it does not completely remove the risks of concealed damage. An infrared thermographer is not capable of seeing inside walls of your home! Yes, that is correct! It is not even capable of seeing through the most thin layer of paint! Normally, our human vision is limited to a very small portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thermal energy has a much longer wavelength than visible light. So long, in fact, that the human eye can not detected, just like we can’t see radio waves. With thermal imaging, the portion of the spectrum we perceive is dramatically expanded, helping us to see and measure the thermal energy emitted from an object by reflection. Unlike visible light, in the infrared world, everything with a temperature above zero admits heat. Even very cold objects, like ice cubes, emit infrared. Visible light doesn’t affect the thermal world as well, so you can see just as well and highly lit and total dark environments. Well, let me guess, another question………… I bet your wondering how this helps during your inspection of your new home? and yes! once again, another fantastic question.

For this one we quoted Jonathan Stoddard of Imperial Pest Prevention who gladly informed us as so, “Please remember a thermal image camera has many uses for many things. We are only speaking upon the basics of the pest control industry for a termite WDO inspection. With that being said, we typically use a thermal image camera for; Wood Destroying Insect Activity- significant extreme live wood destroying termite activity can be detected using this technology due to the heat generated by active live termite infestations by large colonies. Only live active termites can produce a great deal of heat that may be visible to the infrared camera. Please note that minor activity will not be detectable however some areas not normally visible to the naked eye may be indicated which then may allow for a more invasive inspection to be carried out and further investigated. The other main purpose of the WDO inspector using a thermal imaging camera would be for the assistance in; moisture detection in walls and ceilings- in the wonderful real estate market it is all too common to run into a beautiful freshly painted remodeled home. Thermal imaging camera may play to assist in this type of inspection as well. Under ideal conditions the identification of possible water damage of walls, floors, and ceilings may present itself. By detecting the difference in temperature between a wet location and the surrounding dry areas, thermal imaging can help assist in the detection of a hidden moisture concern that would not be visible during a strictly visual WDO termite inspection”.

Well, there you have it!, The use of a thermal imaging camera appears it can vastly assist in many ways for those of you looking to have a termite inspection on your next new or curent home. It appears the day of the good old flashlight and screwdriver may soon be behind us as industry leaders such as Imperial Pest Prevention continue to reinvent the everchanging pest control trade.
