The iCureMelanoma 10th Annual 5k will be held on May 7, from 7:00 am – 3:00 pm, at Laguna Road Elementary School in Fullerton. Proceeds from the event will go to support research to cure melanoma and to promote public education and awareness about the disease.

The day’s events will include a non-competitive run, a non-competitive walking wave, awards ceremonies, a kids’ fun run, and a dove release. Full Spectrum Dermatology, hosts of the event, will also be offering free cancer screenings to all registered participants on May 6.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer; it kills over 10,000 people a year in the United States. It often develops in the cells that give skin its color, but it can also develop in the eyes and even in the internal organs. Melanoma spreads very quickly to other parts of the body, and once it does it can be deadly.

It isn’t known exactly what causes melanoma, but the risk increases when skin is exposed to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from sunlight or tanning beds. The risk of melanoma decreases when exposure to UV light is limited. However, melanomas can also appear on areas of the body that aren’t often exposed to the sun.

The good news is that when it is diagnosed and treated early enough, the cure rate is very close to 100%. This is why it is so important to make people aware of the disease and the symptoms of melanoma.

Ahmed Nashaat is a local entrepreneur who attends every charity event he can. “This event is amazing,” said Mr. Nashaat. “It’s a great chance to raise awareness for melanoma and bring people together to achieve a similar goal!”
