Horse Have Allergies? Pallergy Drops are Easier than Shots, Safer than Steroids

Industry: Family & pets

Treatments for allergies in horses have drawbacks. Steroids pose health risks and shots are hard to administer. That's where Pallergy oral drops come in.

Just like people, horses can develop allergies that lead to a host of uncomfortable allergy symptoms. While allergy immunotherapy used to be to be available through allergy shots alone, it can now be administered as animal-friendly oral drops available through Pallergy.

Allergy immunotherapy is the only treatment that has been proven to alter the actual allergic disease in horses-not simply its symptoms. It can desensitize horses to allergens in their environment that commonly set off allergic reactions. Pallergy drops are a form of sublingual immunotherapy and are dispensed into a horse’s mouth daily-an easier alternative than trying to get a horse to stand still for an allergy injection.

Dr. Stuart Agren who developed the Pallergy drops said that they offer significant advantages over treatments such as steroids or antihistamines.

“These medications may help with short-term flare-ups, but the reactions usually continue without a long-term solution,” said Agren. “Pallergy drops can attack the allergy at its source and stop the cycle of symptoms.”

Agren said that another drawback of synthetic medications is that they can lead to gastrointestinal upset, decreased energy and even increased risk of diabetes or blood clotting.

“Pallergy drops are made up of all-natural antigens in a saline solution,” said Dr. Agren. “They are free of the side effects of medications and far easier on the horse’s body.”

Common allergy triggers for horses include insects such as midges or horseflies. (Once they bite, their saliva stirs up the allergic reaction.) Seasonal pollens can also cause allergies just as they do in humans. Ironically, that includes pollens from grasses that often populate horse grazing areas. Horses may also be allergic to dust and mold as well as topical solutions such as shampoos.

Horse allergies commonly manifest through atopic dermatitis which includes skin rash, hives, itching, and raised, red skin bumps known as “hot spots.” Horses may also develop a runny or bloody nose, excessive sneezing, wheezing and heavy, labored breathing.

Veterinarians around the country can now prescribe Pallergy drops for horse allergy treatment.
