October 16, 2018, was the 38th annual World Food Day, a date set apart in 1945 by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. The purpose of World Food Day is to draw attention to the efforts to alleviate hunger around the world with a focus on achieving its elimination by 2030.

The theme for this year’s World Food Day was “Our Actions Are Our Future.”

It is estimated that one out of seven people in the world goes hungry. One in seven may not seem like much until we realize that there are approximately seven billion people in the world. It may have a more meaningful impact to realize that one billion people are suffering from hunger right now.

According to the IAB Health Productions, LLC webpage (https://www.iabhp.com/national-wellness-observance-calendar/world-food-day/), “Events are organized in over 130 countries across the world, making it one of the most celebrated days of the UN calendar. These events promote worldwide awareness and action for those who suffer from hunger and for the need to ensure food security and nutritious diets for all.”

Many of our Gospel for Asia (GFA)(www.gfa.org) field partners planned special events for World Food Day. GFA-supported pastors, churches, Sunday school classes, women’s fellowships, Bridge of Hope centers, and Bible college students participated in food distribution and educational events across Asia.

For instance, all GFA-supported churches in one diocese made plans to distribute food packets, while in another diocese numerous GFA-supported Women’s Fellowships planned to distribute over 35,000 food packets total.

The churches and other groups executed well-defined plans of action to provide nutritious meals and packaged foods to senior care homes, hospitals, orphanages, railway stations, and leper colonies.

Their collective objective is to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the poor and hungry, whether they are in small villages, begging on the streets, or dwelling in the slums.
