On November 23, 2021, the Ukrainian educational project STEM is FEM presented art exhibition SHE is SCIENCE. The event took place in The Hague, the Netherlands, during an event dedicated to Ukrainian science, culture, and cuisine. The initiator of the project and the founder of GenIT Sergey Tokarev told us about this event.

According to Tokarev, the project heroines depicted on the portraits are twelve Ukrainian scientists of the past and present. These are the portraits of female specialists in genetics, mathematics, biology, and other sciences.

“Each of them has made a great contribution to the development of both local [Ukrainian] and world science. The main goal of our project is to acquaint as many people as possible with the heroines who have changed and are changing the life of mankind for the better yet remain little known about,” Sergey Tokarev says.

The exposition was prepared in two stages. First, modern Ukrainian illustrators created 12 stylized portraits of female scientists, and then, essays, that became winners in the All-Ukrainian competition among girls aged 14-21, were chosen as captions to the portraits. In these essays, the authors described the life story and scientific achievements of the exhibition heroines and contemplated on the role of women in science.

The exhibition was officially presented on June 10 in Kyiv, Ukraine. The presentation was accompanied by a charity auction. The event allows the organizers to raise funds to cover the educational expenses of the girls who won the essay competition.

After that, the exhibition was shown in other cities of Ukraine. The first ones were the cities in Eastern Ukraine: Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyyi Rih, and Mariupol. In total, the exposition was shown in more than ten Ukrainian cities. In autumn, the exhibition has been presented in Germany and Belgium.
