Gateway Domestic Violence Services Announces Karmen Carter as Executive Director

Gateway Domestic Violence Services​ ​has appointed Karmen Carter as Executive Director of the organization. Gateway is the only 24/7 shelter serving the City of Aurora and Arapahoe County. Gateway provides emergency services and support to individuals and families experiencing domestic violence.

In her role as Executive Director of Gateway Domestic Violence Services, Karmen will lead all fundraising and operational activities by working with the community to transform Gateway into the best-run, evidence-based, effective and compassionate shelter within the United States.

“The ​mission to prevent and eliminate partner violence and to empower people for social transformation, is one that I strongly believe in,” said Karmen Carter. “I am honored to join the staff and Board of Directors in this critical work to support survivors of Domestic Violence on their healing journeys, to increase awareness of the impact of domestic violence and to further educate the community on ways to recognize and prevent it.”

Karmen joins Gateway DV Services after 35 years of relevant experience in nonprofit work, including executive director roles at ​The Blue Bench (formerly the Rape Assistance and Awareness Program) and ​Judi’s House​. She has also worked as Director of Programs at the ​Colorado Nonprofit Development Center​ and held roles as Development Director and Development Coordinator for the ​Children’s Legal Clinic​ and ​Mi Casa Resource Center for Women​. Her financial acumen includes leading successful fundraising efforts as well as executing and managing Federal, State, and local grant processes.

Karmen maintains a broad service record as a board member for the Rose Andom Center (founding Board member); Denver Victim Services Network (Chair, Steering Committee); and Denver Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) (founding Board member) and has experience building strong boards in her previous roles as an executive director.
