Fusion PPT, a recognized strategy and technology consulting firm, announced today that CEO Michael Biddick will be a featured speaker for the InformationWeek Webinar “The Future of FedRAMP.” The 60-minute webinar will be held at 2PM EDT on Tuesday October 7th, 2014. Biddick, an expert in the field of cloud computing who has authored a book on “Federal Cloud Computing” and written over 50 articles on cloud-related topics, will discuss the current state of the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP) and what the program’s outlook is going forward.
Cloud security necessitates the use of additional security controls beyond those applied solely to physical environments. FedRAMP is a government-wide security management program started in June 2012 as a part of the U.S. Government’s Cloud First initiative. FedRAMP now provides a process based on over 300 security controls to bring a standard approach to cloud-based security assessments and authorization. The June 5th deadline requiring agencies to make sure that their cloud solutions are compliant with FedRAMP has come and gone, and some agencies are wondering what’s next.
FedRAMP’s security controls are based on the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) Special Publication 800-53 Revision 3, which governs cloud computing security standards. Currently, a dozen cloud services have been given provisional authority to operate by FedRAMP’s joint authorization board (JAB), and there are over 150 known instances in operation across the federal government today. However, with the release of Revision 4 to the publication in April 2013, FedRAMP must update to include the 450 new security requirements in Revision 4. There will be a greater emphasis on continuous monitoring of configurations, instead of periodic certification, and agencies will still need to verify that their cloud services comply with new FedRAMP 2.0 security controls. This means lots of work for agencies in the months ahead.
During the webinar Biddick, alongside other industry leaders, will provide his insight on what agencies and service providers can expect from FedRAMP 2.0. Come to this session armed with your questions. Participants in the webinar will have an opportunity to submit questions directly to the panelists for a live Q&A session during the hour.
