Free water analysis service from Earth Science Labs tests for algae and cyanobacteria

Free raw water analysis service will test water samples for algae and cyanobacteria that can cause toxic HABs and other water treatment problems.

A new raw water analysis service is now available from Earth Science Labs (ESL). The service is open to municipal and industrial water users as well as lake and reservoir managers. Testing is free and will check raw water samples for algae and cyanobacteria that can cause harmful algal blooms (HABs) and a variety of other water treatment problems. Users pay only for the cost of shipping samples.
HABs have surged in the US over the past ten years, according to the Environmental Working Group (EWG). The group tracks HABs nationally by aggregating local news reports of blooms. Commonly referred to as blue green algae for their neon green color, HABs are actually caused by bacteria known as cyanobacteria. Large colonies of cyanobacteria can endanger humans and animals when dying cells split open and release toxins into the water column.
Certain species of cyanobacteria can also produce compounds known as geosmin and MIB. Although these compounds are not harmful, they degrade the taste and odor of drinking water. They are especially problematic for drinking water treatment plants because humans can detect them at concentrations as low as 10 nanograms per liter (ng/L). Controlling the HABs that produce these compounds is a critical to reducing taste and odor complaints.
“Testing is critical,” said ESL Senior Scientist, Fred Singleton. “Knowing the species and concentrations of algae or cyanobacteria in the water can help plant operators and lake managers develop targeted treatment programs. We are pleased to offer this service.”
Earth Science Laboratories Inc. manufactures EarthTec for controlling algae and cyanobacteria. EarthTec is EPA registered, approved for use in open water or in pipelines and NSF Certified to ANSI Standard 60.
